Beer and Food go together like?

Beer is as versatile as it is diverse.

A little known fact is that beer can provide both complimentary and contrasting experiences when paired with food …

For your own consideration (& comment!) the following menu will help you to explore and enhance your enjoyment of beer and food together ...

  • The more hop bitterness the beer has, the heartier or livelier the meal needs to be to hold its own. Don’t overwhelm your palate or meal and ruin what the chef was trying to achieve.
  • Another general rule is keep sweet with sweet, and tart with tart. Try to keep your beer sweeter or tarter than the sweet or tart food on the plate. There are exceptions, like pairing drier robust beers with sweet chocolates.
  • Throw all of the rules out the window and experiment with contrasting and complimentary pairings. Match foods with complimentary flavors, or try contrasting them and create a slew of unique results.
  • For those of you, who are bound to the wine pairing school of thought
    • Think of ale as red wine and lager as white wine.
    • Hoppy beers can also be used in place of a pairing that calls for an acidic wine.
  • Taste is very subjective and what works for one person might not work for another. If it tastes good to you, then go for it. However, also be open to suggestions, as these tend to come with some knowledge and possible palate enlightenment.
  • Though it honestly doesn’t matter, these tips might help you to convert your taste buds over to beer or those of a friend over to beer.

Of course, here at the Shepherd & Flock, we like to spoil you for choice … we have plenty of real ales as well as lagers all of which can complement our varied food menu!

PS We also have some fine wines available!

Sometimes the Good News does make the News…!

As you might expect we think our pub is rather special.
We’re also grateful for our loyal customers who also reckon we’re pretty special!

Testimonials are also most welcome, so it was great to read a review from ‘The Good Time Guide’ who have said the following about us ….

“When a famous pub/restaurant is located on a roundabout, you have two great British inventions proudly combined. When said venue is as fantastic as Farnham's Shepherd and Flock, you are entitled to feel a sense of true patriotism.

What is it that makes the Shepherd and Flock so great? Well, being located a short hop from the famous Hogs Back Brewery means that real ale fans are in for a treat, with a fine array on offer - along with the usual assortment of lagers, wines, spirits and soft drinks.

The food is just as impressive - produce is always fresh and high quality. With a daily changing menu and extensive specials board, there will definitely be something you fancy to enjoy in the enormous dining area.
Having recently celebrated their 21st birthday, the Shepherd and Flock have also had something of a spruce up, with paint and new furniture making the great venue just that better. That's not even with the deserved hyperbole of the enormous outdoor area - part large pub garden, part lush greenery; it is a site to behold. All in all, the perfect place to enjoy a bite and a drink!”

Need we say more?
Apart from …. Come on down and see for yourself!

Valentine’s Day in pubs – a match made by Cupid?

Okay … love is definitely in the air today!

Whether you’re the type who’s already booked the romantic meal, hopefully here at the Shepherd & Flock! and bought the card, or the kind who complains every year about the greeting card industry commoditising romance, I have some useful information. Okay, so the concept can be nauseating and it’s more than a bit cheesy. However, you can stand to gain from it

If you’re looking for things to do on Valentine’s Day for yourself and your partner, the pub could be the perfect choice. If you want to celebrate it on the day, then pubs and Tuesday’s are made to go together

Is your beloved a beer fan? If so, taking them to a pub with a good selection – such as here at the Shepherd & Flock will really show that you know what they like – it says a lot more than a cheesy teddy or an impersonal bunch of flowers. If you’ve only just started seeing each other, again, it’s perfect – low key, no pressure, but still making an effort.

Still not convinced? Bitter Sweet Partnership research has shown that beer is more suitable for romantic dates than you’d think – their research found that ...
  •  44% of men would be pleasantly surprised to see their date drinking a beer and 26% would be secretly pleased.
  • Good food, good drink, a laid back atmosphere and the company of someone who enjoys these things too – sounds like a perfect date to me.
What do you think? Do pubs do enough to capture Valentine’s Day trade, or are they better off not trying to compete?

And whether you’re single, married, or somewhere in between, will you be going to the pub this Valentine’s Day? ...
